MX Master 3S Mac Setup Without Logi Options+

The MX Master 3S is a great mouse, but its software story on macOS is heavier than it needs to be. Logi Options+ is an Electron app that runs hundreds of megabytes of background processes and asks you to sign in before you can map a single button. If all you want is smooth scrolling, working side buttons, and a couple of gestures, you can skip it entirely. This guide sets up the MX Master 3S on macOS with LinguaX — a native, under-5MB utility with no account and no telemetry.

What You Get Without Logi Options+

LinguaX recognizes the MX Master 3S model directly, so it knows about the thumb button, the gesture button, and wheel tilt without manual probing. You configure everything locally:

  • Smooth scrolling with independent Speed and Smoothness controls.
  • Side-button and thumb-button mapping — click, double-click, long-press, and directional swipe.
  • Gestures on the thumb button, including trackpad-like Space switching.
  • Battery level display for the mouse over Bluetooth.
  • Per-app overrides, so the same button can do different things in different apps.

What the System Already Does (and Where It Stops)

macOS will pair and use the MX Master 3S out of the box — pointer movement, left/right click, and basic wheel scrolling all work with no software. What macOS does not give you is continuous smooth scrolling for the wheel, remapping of the thumb/gesture button, or per-app behavior. That is the gap LinguaX fills, and it is the only reason most people install Logi Options+ in the first place.

Setup Steps

  1. Pair the mouse. Connect the MX Master 3S over Bluetooth or the Logi Bolt receiver in System Settings as usual.
  2. Install LinguaX and grant Accessibility permission (and Input Monitoring if prompted).
  3. Confirm the model. Open the device view — the MX Master 3S should be recognized automatically. If you have cleared a previous binding, use Clear model binding and reconnect.
  4. Enable smooth scrolling. Turn it on first, then tune Speed, then Smoothness, testing a long page after each change.
  5. Map the side/thumb buttons. Assign back/forward, Mission Control, or any app shortcut. The thumb button can be set to gestures such as Space switching.
  6. Add gestures. Configure click, double-click, long-press, and swipe directions to taste.
  7. Add per-app overrides only where you need different behavior (for example, a faster flick in the browser, precise scrolling in a code editor).

After sleep/wake, the Bluetooth connection recovers automatically — you should not need to toggle scrolling or reconnect through the day.
